GTA 6 is estimated to have taken 4.38 million preorders and $429 million in its first two months of bookings. The estimate comes from analytics firm Sensor Tower and covers the period through August 18, 2026. Take-Two has published no figures, so this is an outside model, not an accounting statement.

The number that matters is not the big one

$429 million makes the headline, but the interesting figure is the mix: 89% of preorders are said to be the $99.99 Ultimate Edition, against 11% for the $79.99 Standard. For a premium game, higher editions usually account for somewhere between 10 and 20 percent, so the ratio here is inverted.

The arithmetic checks out, which is a useful consistency test: 4.38 million copies at that mix give an average price of about $97.8, or roughly $428 million. The two figures circulating separately describe the same dataset.

What it means in practice: people preordering GTA 6 are not picking the ticket in, they are picking the full package. That is the behaviour you see when an audience takes it as given that they will buy anyway, so they may as well take everything up front. If you are still deciding which edition makes sense for you, the item-by-item comparison sits in our guide to consoles, editions and preorders.

PS5 leads Xbox three to one

The estimated split is 77% PlayStation 5 and 23% Xbox Series X|S: a little over a million copies on the Xbox side. It is a wide gap, consistent with the installed base of the two consoles this generation, and worth noting that it covers digital preorders, not the whole market.

One detail dovetails with our earlier coverage: this is all digital because GTA 6 does not ship on disc, and even the boxed copy contains a code. It is the same reason PS5 codes are region locked while Xbox ones are not.

What the projection says, and why to take it loosely

Analyst Karl Kontus, also of Sensor Tower, suggests preorders could reach 25 million copies and around $2 billion before release. That is a projection built on two months of data, in an unusual period at that: the game is under a media spotlight over a leak affair, and the August 27 Extended Look has not aired yet.

Preorder curves are not linear: they spike around events and in the final weeks before launch. A 25 million projection could prove conservative or generous depending on how that tail behaves, and nobody knows which. The wider picture of launch estimates, with the Newzoo and Konvoy numbers, stays in our piece on sales forecasts.

In short

  • Sensor Tower estimates 4.38 million preorders and $429 million through August 18, 2026, rising to roughly 4.6 million copies in the figures released after the Extended Look.
  • Take-Two has confirmed nothing: these are outside estimates, not official data.
  • 89% of preorders are said to be the $99.99 Ultimate, against the 10 to 20 percent typical of premium editions.
  • The estimated split is 77% PS5 and 23% Xbox Series X|S.
  • The 25 million preorder projection remains a model, not a reliable forecast.

Frequently asked questions

How many preorders does GTA 6 have?

Per the Sensor Tower estimate, 4.38 million copies through August 18, 2026. It is not an official figure: Take-Two has published no preorder numbers.

How much has GTA 6 already made from preorders?

The same estimate puts it at $429 million. That figure is also an outside reconstruction based on observing digital storefronts.

Why is nearly everyone buying the Ultimate Edition?

The estimated 89% share is far above the industry norm, which for premium editions sits between 10 and 20 percent. It signals an audience already committed to buying, not proof that the higher edition is worth it for everyone.

Are Xbox preorders doing badly?

The estimated 23% still amounts to a little over a million copies. It is a smaller share than PS5, in line with the installed base gap between the two consoles.

Will these numbers become official?

Real data arrives with Take-Two’s financial reporting after the November 19, 2026 launch. At that point these estimates get replaced, not updated.
