GTA 6 day one: unlock times, preload and download

When GTA 6 unlocks

Rockstar has not announced the unlock time. The most solid data point is the store listings: PlayStation Store and Xbox Store put the release at local midnight on November 19 in each country. In the US that is 12:00 am Eastern (05:00 UTC), which means 9:00 pm on November 18 on the West Coast; in the UK it is midnight in London. The “around 05:00 UTC” figure that circulated for months as a global time is simply the US listing. A listing is not an announcement and can change until the last minute: the full country table is in our unlock time guide.

In practice, if the listings hold, you start at midnight where you live, or at 12:00 am Eastern anywhere in the US. If you want to be up and running at minute zero, finish your preload beforehand. We’ll update this page if Rockstar announces a different time.

The preload: from November 12

Preload lets you download the game ahead of time, so at unlock all that’s left is to press play. What Rockstar has confirmed:

• Preload starts on November 12, 2026, one week before launch, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
• It’s for pre-order holders: a digital pre-order on PS Store or Xbox, or a physical copy, which comes with a download code in the box rather than a disc. Either way, you preload from November 12.
• Preload is not always the finished game: a day-one patch often arrives close to unlock and still needs downloading. Factor it into your timing.

How big the download will be

Rockstar has not announced the install size, so any precise number going around is an estimate. A few honest reference points:

• The studio’s recent games run to many tens of gigabytes and grow with updates. For a title this size, expect a large install, not a small one.
• Free up space with margin over what you’d guess: between the base game, the day-one patch and future updates, the space needed climbs over time.
• If your console’s SSD is nearly full, consider extra storage before November 19, not on the morning itself.

Launch morning, in order

1. In the days before: preload done from November 12, system and patches updated, space freed with margin.
2. Just before unlock: check there’s no last-minute update queued.
3. At unlock, local midnight on November 19 according to the store listings (12:00 am Eastern in the US): launch, download any day-one patch, step into Leonida.
4. From day one: the map and tracker are ready to fill up with your progress.
