For the first time in the main series, GTA 6 puts a couple at the center. Not three switchable protagonists like GTA 5, but two stories that intertwine: Jason and Lucia. Here is who they are, sticking to what Rockstar has actually shown in the trailers and official pages.

Lucia Caminos

Lucia is the first playable female protagonist of a mainline GTA. As the story opens she walks out of the Leonida Penitentiary, and the official bio is precise on two points that get inverted everywhere else: she was inside for defending her family, and what got her out was luck, not the end of a sentence. Liberty City is not where she grew up: it is the city her mother carries the dream of a different life from. Trailer 1 already put her front and center, and she sets the tone. The full dossier is in her wiki entry.

Jason Duval

Jason is an ex-military man scraping by in the Leonida Keys, working for the area’s traffickers. He knows the scene, he knows how to move, and like Lucia he feels the only way out is one score bigger than the rest. His story hooks into hers until it becomes its counterpart. It is all in his wiki entry.

Why the pairing changes things

The label you see everywhere is “Bonnie and Clyde”, and it is worth knowing it is journalistic: that name appears neither on rockstargames.com/VI nor on the two official character pages. What Rockstar actually writes is more ambiguous and more interesting: for Jason, meeting Lucia might be the best or the worst thing that ever happened to him; for Lucia, a life with Jason might be the way out. This is not a criminal couple in lockstep by definition: it is a bet that can go two ways. Trailer 2 shows them exactly like that, between getaways, robberies and everyday moments.

In gameplay terms, since August 27 some of it is known. In the Extended Look character switching runs for twenty-seven minutes, and the protagonist you are not controlling does not stand around: they shoot, join in on robberies, take cover. On the rules of the switch the previews gathered at Rockstar North are more precise than the film: instant when the two are close, with a few seconds of aerial transition when they are apart. That the switch gets locked at certain story moments, on the other hand, is everywhere and traceable to nobody: it comes from an adverb in a headline and hardened site by site. What is documented is one job in the film that only one of them can take. The full system, line by line with its source, is in our duo system guide.

How to place them

Jason and Lucia are two faces of the same Leonida: he is the province and the Keys, she is the city and a past elsewhere. It is how the game holds together the glossy and the run-down we discuss in the Trailer 2 breakdown. Frequently asked questions

Who are the protagonists of GTA 6?

Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, both playable. She walks out of the Leonida Penitentiary as the story opens, where she had ended up for defending her family, and is the first playable female lead of a mainline GTA; he is an ex-soldier working for smugglers in the Leonida Keys.

Can you play as both?

Yes, the story is built around the pair, and character switching is visible in action in the Extended Look: instant when the two are close, with a few seconds of aerial transition when they are apart. That it stays locked to one protagonist at certain points is a claim with no source behind it.

Does GTA 6 have more protagonists than GTA 5?

No, it has two against GTA 5’s three. The real difference is the dynamic: not three switchable stories but a two-person relationship, which the official material describes as possibly the best or the worst thing to happen to either of them. The “Bonnie and Clyde” label you read everywhere is the press’s, not Rockstar’s.

Who voices Jason and Lucia?

Rockstar has not announced the performers. Every name circulating so far is unofficial, and we will add them to the wiki pages only once confirmed.
