GTA 5 vs GTA 6: what actually changes
Thirteen years separate GTA 5 (2013) from GTA 6 (November 19, 2026). In between: two console generations, an online mode that made billions, and sky-high expectations. But what actually changes between the two games? Here is the point-by-point comparison, keeping confirmed facts separate from reasonable expectations.

The map: from a city to a state
GTA 5 gave us Los Santos and Blaine County: one big city plus its hinterland. GTA 6 raises the ambition: Leonida is an entire state inspired by Florida, with at least six confirmed areas ranging from the metropolis (Vice City) to the wetlands (Grassrivers), from the islands (Leonida Keys) to coastal towns (Port Gellhorn). How big it is exactly has not been disclosed: any number you read online is an unofficial estimate. You can find the full overview in our guide to the areas of Leonida.
The protagonists: from trio to duo
GTA 5 introduced switching between three protagonists, a first for the series. GTA 6 does not walk that back but changes the formula: two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, tied together in a Bonnie and Clyde relationship. Official store listings confirm missions that can be tackled as a pair and the ability to switch between the two. The core difference is narrative: not three parallel lives, but one shared story seen from two perspectives.
Technology: a two-generation leap
GTA 5 was born on PS3 and Xbox 360, and however well it has aged, the limits show. GTA 6 is built directly for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no last-generation baggage. The trailers show crowds, traffic and detail density unprecedented for the series, with lighting that leans hard into the Florida-at-sunset atmosphere. Rockstar has shared no technical details about the engine: we only know it is the evolution of the RAGE engine the series has always used.
The game world: denser and more reactive
The trailers hint at packed beaches, in-game social networks, swamp wildlife and more interiors. These are signs of a world designed to feel more alive than GTA 5’s, where most buildings were set dressing. How much of this translates into concrete mechanics we will only know at launch: for now it is the direction the trailers point to, not a list of confirmed features.
What stays the same
Official material confirms the return of an open world, driving, shooting and social satire. Rockstar has not presented multiplayer, collectibles or their timing relative to the campaign. If those activities return, our interactive map and tracker will be ready to catalogue them.
Should you wait for GTA 6 or catch up on GTA 5?
If you have never played GTA 5, picking it up today costs very little and it remains one of the most complete games ever made: heading into GTA 6 knowing the previous chapter makes sense. If you have already squeezed it dry, the remaining months are perfect for revisiting the classics: the story of Vice City is the ideal refresher before returning to Florida.
