What the Extended Look actually moved: Netflix's numbers

For twenty-seven minutes on August 27, Netflix was a video game channel. Estimates from analytics firm Sensor Tower say the operation worked, and in one respect worked too well: the site struggled just as the presentation went live.

MetricEstimated changeCompared to
Viewership+35%the previous hour
Viewership+50%the same hour the day before
Mobile app usersalmost +50%the average for that hour across the previous 12 Thursdays
Website visitors+125%that same average

The number that matters is the website one, not the viewership one

The figure everyone is passing around is the +35%. It is also the least interesting, because a 35% hour-over-hour bump is what any anticipated primetime release does.

The number that says something is the other one: +125% website visitors. Web traffic more than doubling is not people who were already on Netflix switching channels, it is people who came from outside on purpose. And the consequence showed: for some viewers the platform gave way at the exact moment the presentation started.

There is a practical difference between the two figures. The first measures how many were already inside. The second measures how many came in.

What each side actually gets out of it

For Rockstar the calculation is the mirror image, and just as clear. The company put twenty-seven minutes of gameplay in front of an audience that would not have gone looking for it on YouTube, and did so six hours before publishing it on its own channels: anyone who wanted to see it first had to go through there. It is the same logic that puts films in cinemas before streaming, run in reverse.

It is worth remembering where that evening came from. The week before, the game had circulated in ten stolen videos, filmed with a camera pointed at a screen, with no context and no clean audio. Our full timeline of the leaks covers how it got there. On August 27 Rockstar took back control of the frame, on a stage that reaches people who had never gone looking for the leaks at all.

A side number that updates another piece

In the same batch of data Sensor Tower raises its preorder estimate to roughly 4.6 million copies, with 77% on PlayStation. Through August 18 the same firm estimated 4.38 million: there is growth, but it is slower than the word “reveal” suggests, and the period covered includes only the first days after the presentation. The details on the edition mix, which is the genuinely unusual part of these preorders, are in our piece on the preorder estimates.

In short

  • Sensor Tower estimates Netflix viewership up 35% on the previous hour and 50% on the same hour the day before.
  • The more meaningful figure is web traffic, more than doubled (+125%) against the average of the previous twelve Thursdays: an audience arriving from outside, not viewers switching channels.
  • Mobile app users grew by almost 50% on the same basis of comparison.
  • For some viewers the platform gave way right at the start of the presentation.
  • None of these numbers are Netflix’s own: they are a third party’s estimates, and belong in the order-of-magnitude bracket.
  • In the same release the preorder estimate rises to roughly 4.6 million copies, 77% of them on PlayStation.

Frequently asked questions

How many people watched the Extended Look on Netflix?

Unknown. Netflix has published no viewer count, and the available estimates measure percentage changes in traffic and active users, not how many people watched the video.

Did Netflix crash because of GTA 6?

For some viewers the platform had trouble right as the presentation began. It was not a global outage, but it is consistent with the web traffic spike estimated at that same moment.

How much did Netflix pay for the exclusive?

It has not been made public. Neither Netflix nor Rockstar disclosed the commercial terms of the deal, so any figure in circulation is a third-party estimate.

Where can the Extended Look be watched now?

On Rockstar’s official YouTube channel and on rockstargames.com, where it arrived six hours after the Netflix premiere. Our account of what it shows is in the news piece on what the Extended Look showed.
