Rockstar talks GTA 6 on the eve of the reveal, and not about the leaks

On August 26 Rockstar opened its doors to Dazed for a deep dive with six members of the team, named and titled: the head of development, the senior vice president of narrative, the senior art director for characters, one of the writers, the vice president of UI design, and a stylist. Nobody played it, nobody watched a demo: this is an interview, not a preview.

The timing is the first thing worth noticing. It lands the day before the Extended Look, after a week in which the game was seen only in stolen clips, and in a fashion and culture magazine rather than a games outlet.

What Rockstar said

On register, Rob Nelson places the game between the studio’s two poles: GTA V’s satire on one side, Red Dead Redemption 2’s realism on the other, with a more “grounded and reactive” world.

There is one thing he says about the characters that matters more than any single mechanic: “We want to enable as much self-expression as possible, without losing the essence of the characters.” And: “These characters aren’t empty avatars that you can do whatever you want with. Their story becomes a journey you share with them.” Coming from the studio that built the series on the opposite idea, the avatar who does as it pleases, that is a statement of intent.

Stated is not the same as shown

This distinction is the whole value of the piece, so we are putting it in writing.

Everything above is confirmed in our sense: these are Rockstar people speaking for the company, with names and roles attached. It is not verified in the sense of seen working. A system described in a promotional interview the day before a showcase is, by definition, the game the company wants to describe.

This is not a suspicion of bad faith. It is the ordinary gap between how a thing is described and how it behaves with a pad in your hands. It only needed saying, because the yardstick arrived a few hours later.

How they say they built it

The organisational numbers are the least repeated part of the piece and the most concrete.

The team has more than doubled since Red Dead Redemption 2. A Los Angeles office works almost solely on pedestrians. The vehicle handling group includes actual race-car drivers. A research team is permanently based in Miami, and more than fifty real street artists were commissioned for the murals. The stylist interviewed has been on the project since 2023: three years on clothes.

On method, Rupert Humphries is explicit: “We will meet with ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters, gun dealers and anyone notorious or influential who’ll take our calls. We hang out, get a feeling for the place, listen to the stories, cross-reference that with books and journalism.”

On music he names Miami bass, Kodak Black and Sexyy Red, and separates three different scenes in the city: house parties in Overtown, the clubs on the river, and the South Beach venues where a bottle costs thousands. Jillian Carr sums up the theme of Vice City in a line that also explains the body system: “Vice City is built around vanity.”

Two thinly documented neighbourhood names also appear, Little Cuba and Vice Beach, and above all Stockyard, stated to be modelled on Wynwood, Miami’s mural district. It is a name we had already run into, but in a different place and a different form: the radio menu in one leaked clip showed “Stockyard FM”. The neighbourhood is now confirmed by Rockstar; the radio station is not, and it stays out of our wiki until the company documents it.

What goes unmentioned

The leaks do not appear in the interview. Not one line, in a feature published while the tenth stolen clip was circulating and while Take-Two was asking Microsoft and Discord for the data to put a name to it.

This is not an oversight, and it is more interesting than that. On that same August 26, but on Instagram rather than here, Rockstar broke a two-week silence: it called the leak “heartbreaking for our team”, wrote that “this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game”, apologised for the wait and added that the game is nearly finished.

So the company did address the leaks, but kept the two things in separate rooms: the apology on a social channel, the account of the game in an interview where the leaks never come up. The choice of outlet points the same way. A fashion and culture magazine steers the conversation toward Miami, music and clothes, which is to say away from where the awkward questions would have arrived on their own.

Then we saw it

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look aired on the evening of August 27: about twenty-seven minutes of gameplay, which we covered in the news and took apart in the analysis. The game launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The questions this page left open got a partial answer, and it is right to record it. The Jason and Lucia swap was seen working, and it is instant when the two are close. The gym is real, and Rob Nelson restated it to the Italian press in unmistakable terms. On pedestrians the video does show reactions, but a montage cannot prove they are systemic: that will take a pad in hand.

The press previews landed alongside the film and describe the systems far more deeply than this interview did. From those we wrote two guides, on the wanted level and on stealing cars.

In short

  • On August 26 Rockstar gave Dazed an interview with six named team members: none of them played the game or watched a demo.
  • Confirmed: the San Andreas weight system returns and now extends to the face, pedestrians react to a visible weapon, social feeds live in the phone, and the two protagonists swap during missions.
  • The team has more than doubled since Red Dead Redemption 2, a Los Angeles office works almost solely on pedestrians, and over fifty street artists were commissioned for the murals.
  • Stockyard is a confirmed neighbourhood modelled on Wynwood: the “Stockyard FM” seen in a leak is a separate thing and stays out of our wiki.
  • The leaks go unmentioned in the interview: Rockstar’s answer came the same day, in a separate statement on Instagram.

Frequently asked questions

Can you gain weight and go to the gym in GTA 6?

Yes, Rockstar has stated it: weight, muscle tone and facial features change based on food, exercise and sleep, for Jason as well as Lucia. It is the return of the San Andreas system, extended to the face. How it actually behaves in play has not been shown yet.

Can you switch between Jason and Lucia whenever you want?

During missions the switch is built in and stated by Rockstar. Whether it is free outside missions has not been specified.

Has Rockstar commented on the leaked videos?

Yes, but not here. The interview does not mention them; on that same August 26, however, Rockstar posted a statement on Instagram calling the leak “heartbreaking for our team” and saying the game is nearly finished, without naming the group and without announcing legal action. The full timeline is in our piece on every leak.

Are these features confirmed or rumours?

They are confirmed in the sense that Rockstar stated them, through people identified by name and role. They have not yet been shown in motion: the first test is the August 27 Extended Look.
