After billboards, the Heat’s arena and the TV ad, the GTA 6 campaign is also going through YouTube. On one side Rockstar is paying for a comedy show, on the other some of the series’ best-known creators are getting organized for launch, and Rockstar knows about it.

It is declared advertising, so there is nothing to uncover. The point is a different one: Rockstar is choosing an audience the trailers do not necessarily reach, comedy and rap fans on YouTube, and doing it with a character who has nothing to do with video games.

The Vanoss crew and the Miami mansion

The other case comes from a GamesBeat interview. The Vanoss crew, a YouTube collective known for its group videos in GTA 5, has decided to move from the screen to real life.

GamesBeat describes a similar mood across the creator world: new channels dedicated only to GTA news, full GTA 5 and San Andreas playthroughs to warm up audiences, schedules cleared ahead of November 19. One industry manager compares it to “a lottery ticket”. There is also talk of live parties and events organized by Rockstar for creators before launch, but nothing is confirmed.

Why it matters

For years GTA 5 was one of the most watched games on Twitch and YouTube, and a huge part of its success went through there: roleplay, comedy videos, live streams. With GTA 6 Rockstar seems to want to use that from day one, mixing classic advertising, like the TV ad during the NBA, with advertising inside videos. And in Miami creators will find a city already dressed as Vice City, with the arena sign and the Heat’s Vice City night on November 18.

In brief

  • Rockstar sponsors an episode of Coulda Been Records, Druski’s show, with Ali G as a guest.
  • The sponsorship is declared: the episode is “presented by GTA 6”, with a call to pre-order.
  • The Vanoss crew is renting a Miami mansion for two weeks around launch.
  • According to Terroriser, Rockstar knows about the event and asked for attendees’ names.
  • There is talk of Rockstar events for creators before launch, but nothing is confirmed.
