The alligator is the animal Rockstar picked to tell the story of the Grassrivers, the belt of swamp and mangrove that fills inland Leonida. This is not a background detail somebody caught in a freeze frame: it is the wildlife the official text names first.
That sentence is worth reading twice, because it says two things. The first is that the alligator is there, in numbers. The second is that it is not the worst thing living in that water, and Rockstar wrote that on purpose.
Where you see it, in official screenshots
Three of the four images on the Grassrivers page show it, in three different situations.
In one, shot from above, an airboat crosses the lily pads surrounded by alligators, and one of the people aboard aims a gun at the nearest one. In another, a helicopter and two police cars chase a pick-up truck through the swamp, alligators in the water and an airboat in the background. In the third, three people covered in mud pose on an airboat with a dead alligator and wildcat, an automatic weapon leaning against a leg and a rifle in hand.
A note on wording, so this page stays checkable against the source: the body copy uses “gators”, while the image alt text uses both “alligator” and “gator”. Both forms are Rockstar’s own.
Studying animals
In the August 27, 2026 Extended Look, when Jason approaches a dog a contextual menu appears with three entries: Scold, Pet, Study. That third entry is the one press previews connect to a wider system.
If the system works as described, the alligator is exactly the kind of animal that ends up on that list. But that is our inference, not a fact: launch will show.
What is still open
Behavior, aggression toward the player, whether they attack in water, whether you can really hunt them and with what consequences. None of these has been stated by Rockstar, and none can be honestly inferred from a screenshot.
