Is GTA 6 free-to-play? What is free and what is not
No, GTA 6 is not free-to-play. It is a full-price game: $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is not part of PlayStation Plus or Game Pass, and there is no free version, demo or early access. A couple of things genuinely are free, though, and below we separate what is confirmed from what you read online.

What it actually costs
There is no cheaper way in: no “lite” edition, no version with just the opening hours. The only way to pay less is the usual one, retailer discounts. And do not confuse the game with Rockstar’s Vice City Collection, a high-end merchandise box that does not include GTA 6. To choose an edition, see the consoles, editions and pre-orders guide.
It is not on PlayStation Plus or Game Pass
Neither platform has announced GTA 6 for its subscription catalog, and Take-Two has held the same line for years: its frontline games do not launch day and date on subscription services. In 2024, when Microsoft put Call of Duty on Game Pass at launch, CEO Strauss Zelnick said it would not change Take-Two’s decisions, “because our decisions are rational”. He left the door open only for catalog titles, games that have been out for a while and already dropped in price.
In plain terms: to play GTA 6 from November 19 you have to buy it. A future spot in a subscription catalog years down the line, as happened with other Rockstar games, is not ruled out, but there is no announcement and no date.
GTA+ is not GTA 6
This is the most common mix-up, and it comes from a real offer.
So what the offer does not say should not be assumed: GTA+ does not include GTA 6 and has no announced benefits inside GTA 6. And after the free month it renews at full price unless you cancel.
What is genuinely free
- The Vintage Vice City Pack: per Take-Two’s press release, every pre-order and every purchase made before November 20, 2026 gets it, on any edition and on the boxed version too. It includes a ‘55 Vapid Stanier with a garage, vintage outfits and hairstyles for Jason and Lucia, and a weapon pattern inspired by Tommy Vercetti. It is “free” in the sense of bundled: you only get it by buying the game.
- One month of GTA+, digital pre-orders only: it is for GTA Online and the classics library, not for GTA 6.
Nothing else free has been announced. Post-launch updates, any extra content and the multiplayer have no announced price or format yet.
Microtransactions: what is known
The two fit together better than it looks. The ESRB label covers any real-money purchase tied to a game, expansions and upgrades included, and a paid upgrade already exists: Standard to Ultimate. What about online?
There are two separate questions here.
GTA Online, the GTA 5 one, carries on. Take-Two repeated it at its September 2026 shareholder meeting. It is not free-to-play: you get it with GTA 5 or buy it standalone, and on console you also need the platform subscription to play it, PlayStation Plus on PS5 or the entry Game Pass tier on Xbox.
GTA 6 has no multiplayer at launch. Take-Two describes it as a single-player experience, the PlayStation page lists “1 player”, and the ESRB rating does not carry the “Users Interact” element that flags online interaction between players. When multiplayer arrives, and in what form, has not been announced.
Beware of “free GTA 6”
Precisely because GTA 6 is not free, anyone offering it to you for free is trying to take something from you. Two documented cases from 2026:
- Fake early access: in June Malwarebytes flagged sites selling “VIP access” to GTA 6 for cryptocurrency. People who paid got nothing.
- The fake PC demo: in August a GTA 6 “installer” of barely over a megabyte appeared, far too small to hold any modern game, and it installed malware that steals passwords and browser sessions.
The rule is simple: GTA 6 has no demo, no beta, no early access and no PC version. You can only buy it on the PlayStation Store, the Xbox Store, the Rockstar Store and at retailers.
