GTA 6 file size: what is actually known about the GB
“How big is GTA 6?” has one answer, and it is an awkward one: nobody knows, because Rockstar has never said. That is not a gap in this guide, it is the information. Every page handing you a precise number is selling it as a fact without having verified it, and below you will find where each one came from.
No official figure exists, and we checked
We did not take the absence on trust: we went looking in the three places where the number would show up.
- The Take-Two announcement on pre-orders describes preloading, editions and contents, and cites no size at all.
- The PlayStation product page lists release, editions and prices, and has no storage field.
- The Xbox Store listing shows no “approximate size” entry. That is the detail that matters most, because the Xbox Store is historically the first place a size appears before launch: when a real number exists, it will most likely surface there.
The Extended Look of August 27 added nothing either. The only figure circulating in those days was the 14.2 GB of the video file itself, which several sites mistook for the size of the game.
The numbers going around, and where they really come from
| Figure | Where it originates | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| 150-200 GB | Not a source: it is a multiplication starting from RDR2 and GTA 5, often from already-wrong starting numbers, copied between sites until it took on the air of consensus | unverifiable |
| ”just under 200 GB” | A 2024 post from an X account, later deleted, recycled in June 2026 by a second, never identified account | rumor |
| 320 GB | A February 2024 tweet from a leak-aggregator account, also deleted | rumor |
| 676.7 GB | A fabricated Xbox Store screenshot | false |
The last one is worth pausing on, because it is the textbook case. The account that spread it states in its own bio that it publishes fake stories, and the image carries the line “Install on your home Xbox One”: GTA 6 is not coming to Xbox One. Two clues anyone could have checked in thirty seconds, and they did not stop the figure from circulating for days.
Will it really be 300 GB?
Plenty of people are asking, and the short answer is that nobody can know, though there is something to take the edge off it.
The eye-watering figures nearly all come from linear reasoning: bigger map, proportionally bigger game. Modern compression does not work that way. GTA 5 on PS4 had climbed past 135 GB after years of GTA Online updates, while the same GTA 5 on PS5 fits in roughly 86.8 GB: the newer generation shrank a richer game rather than inflating it.
What can be said honestly is that GTA 6 will be big, probably the heaviest Rockstar game ever, and that anyone on a 1 TB console should start clearing space. Anything more precise than that, today, is invented.
The comparisons you can actually verify
Unlike the estimates, these numbers have a source.
| Game | Platform | Size | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | PS4 (2018) | 99 GB | plus 50 GB of additional free space required during installation |
| GTA 5 | PS5 (2022) | 86.8 GB | from store metadata, never announced |
| GTA 5 | PS4, after years of updates | over 135 GB | the launch size was far lower |
The Red Dead Redemption 2 figure is the most useful, for two reasons. First because it comes from Rockstar itself, which proves that when the studio decides to tell you, it does, and for RDR2 it did so about two weeks before release. Second because it contains the part almost nobody mentions: the 50 GB of free space on top of the game’s 99. That is why “I have exactly the space needed” often is not enough.
Watch out for a common error: many pages write “RDR2 was 150 GB” and “GTA 5 is 95 GB”. Both are wrong, and they are precisely the numbers the extrapolations start from. Anyone who gets the easily checkable data wrong has not earned your trust on the data you cannot check.
Why everyone downloads it, even people who buy the box
There is a practical consequence that gets lost in the GB debate: the physical copy of GTA 6 does not contain the game. The box holds a download code, which is why that version arrives on November 12 alongside the preload window rather than on the 19th.
It means the “how big is it” question applies to everyone, with no way out: there is no “install from disc to save bandwidth” option. If your connection is slow, November 12 matters more than November 19.
What to do now, without waiting for the number
- Clear space before November 12, not on the day. If you plan to play at minute zero, the preload has to finish in time.
- Keep headroom beyond the game’s size. The RDR2 precedent asked for 50 GB extra: it is a normal requirement, and it catches almost everyone out.
- Account for a day-one patch, if there is one. Nobody knows whether it will exist or how big it will be: the “15-30 GB” you read is invented with the same technique as the main range.
- Expect two different numbers, one for PS5 and one for Xbox. On the same build, the gap between platforms often exceeds 20 GB.
- Watch the Xbox Store, not news sites. When the “approximate size” entry appears, that will be the first real figure.

In short
- Rockstar has never stated how big GTA 6 is. Checked against the Take-Two announcement, the PlayStation page and the Xbox Store: none of the three carries a size.
- The circulating figures are rumors from deleted accounts, arithmetic extrapolations or outright fakes, like the 676 GB that came from an account declaring itself a parody.
- Preloading is confirmed: November 12, 2026, a week before release.
- The “physical” copy holds a code, not a disc: everybody downloads.
- The verifiable comparisons: RDR2 on PS4 at 99 GB plus 50 free, GTA 5 on PS5 at 86.8 GB.
Frequently asked questions
How many GB is GTA 6?
It has not been announced. Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has ever published a size, and right now it appears neither on the PlayStation page nor on the Xbox Store listing. Any precise figure you find out there is an unverifiable estimate or a rumor, not official data.
Will GTA 6 really be 300 GB?
Nobody can say, but the huge numbers come from linear maths that modern compression contradicts: GTA 5 on PS5 takes up less than its updated PS4 version despite being the better build. GTA 6 will be big, probably the heaviest Rockstar game yet, but “300 GB” has no source today.
When does GTA 6 preloading start?
November 12, 2026 for anyone who pre-ordered a digital version, a week before the November 19 release. That comes from Take-Two’s official announcement. No exact time has been given.
How much free space should I keep beyond the game itself?
It is not known for GTA 6, but the precedent helps: for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4, Rockstar asked for 50 GB of free space on top of the game’s 99, to complete installation. Keeping generous headroom is the prudent call.
Does the physical copy of GTA 6 save me the download?
No. The box holds a download code, not a disc: buying in a shop still means downloading the whole game. That is why the physical version ships on November 12, in time for preloading, rather than on the 19th.
When will we know the real size?
There is no rule. For Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar published it on its own support page about two weeks before release; for GTA 5 on PS5 there was never an announcement and the number surfaced from store metadata at preload time. The place to watch is the Xbox Store listing.
