Cougar
Mammal, big cat
The cougar is the Mount Kalaga predator: an official screenshot shows it stalking a herd of deer at a stream, inside Leonida's national park.
The deer completes the picture of Mount Kalaga National Park: the woods, the stream, the herd drinking and the cougar watching it from a few metres away.
The count, though, is ours and not Rockstar’s: four animals are visible in the image, one drinking in the foreground, two behind and one lying on the bank. The herd detail is not incidental. A single animal can be placed by hand in a promotional shot; a group arranged differently around a water source is the sign of a wildlife system that runs on its own, as in Rockstar’s more recent games.
The official Mount Kalaga copy promises “prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails”. The deer is the classic quarry in that sentence, and over in the Grassrivers another official screenshot shows the outcome of a hunt outright: an alligator and a wildcat killed, posed as trophies on an airboat.
In the Extended Look, approaching a dog brings up a menu with Scold, Pet and Study. Press previews connect studying to a list of animals to complete across Leonida and at the zoo, described by IGN as derived from Red Dead Redemption 2. That is a report, not an announcement: Rockstar has published nothing about it.
Whether herds behave dynamically, how they react to the player and to the predator, and whether hunting is a real activity with a system of its own.
