How big is the GTA 6 map: what is official and what is not
Rockstar has never said how big the GTA 6 map is. No official number exists: no square kilometres, no comparison with GTA 5. Official communication calls it a massive world, and stops there. Everything else, including headlines about a “confirmed” map size, comes from community estimates.
This page keeps the two levels apart: first what is actually known, then where the circulating numbers come from and what they are worth.
What is confirmed about the map
The official perimeter is clear even without square metres. GTA 6 is set in the state of Leonida, modelled on Florida, and the official site documents six areas with names and screenshots: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers wetlands, Port Gellhorn, the Ambrosia inland and the Mount Kalaga National Park. Our news piece on the confirmed areas covers them one by one, and the location pages in the wiki collect what official material shows of each.
Variety, more than extension, is the most solid official fact: a metropolis, an archipelago, wetlands, an industrial small-town coast, rural inland and a natural park in the same state.
Where the circulating numbers come from
One detail that helps when reading the press: many articles with “map size confirmed” in the title quote, in the body, the same community estimates. The confirmation in the headline is there to get clicked, not because a new fact exists.
What the August 2026 leaks add (little, and that matters)
Between August 18 and 20, 2026, an alleged full map of Leonida and footage of a plane flying over Vice City circulated. They look like exactly the material needed to settle the size question. They are not, for two different reasons.
We pass no judgement on the aerial video: it is stolen material and stays outside our perimeter, authentic or not. The general point stands, though, and it settles the matter: a shot from a plane yields no measurement. Estimating a surface from a frame takes at least the camera’s altitude and its field of view, and neither is known. Without scale you get an impression, not data: you can see the territory is wide, which we already knew.
What the leaks genuinely add is new material for the mapping projects, which work by cross-referencing frames. Their estimates will update, and we will report them when they do.
Mind the units: two incompatible families of numbers
Anyone searching for these figures finds two groups of values that do not reconcile, and it is worth explaining why before trusting the first headline that comes up.
- One family says Leonida is around 125 square kilometres.
- The other says around 118-132 square miles, which is 306 to 342 square kilometres, and that is where the “2.7 times bigger than GTA 5” headlines come from.
The two readings differ by a factor of 2.59, which is exactly the ratio between a square mile and a square kilometre. The simplest explanation is a bad conversion repeated from article to article, but without real data there is no telling which one started out right.
The second snag is the yardstick: even for GTA 5 the community measurements disagree, because what gets counted changes. Land alone gives one value, land plus inland water another, and including the navigable ocean a third: depending on the count you go from roughly 75-80 to roughly 127 square kilometres. Saying “double GTA 5” without specifying which of the three you are doubling does not mean much.
This page uses the square kilometre family and says so explicitly, rather than mixing values taken from different counts.
The comparison with GTA 5 and other open worlds
Honesty about numbers applies here too: the surfaces of released games are community measurements, because not even for GTA 5 did Rockstar ever publish an official km² figure. Read the comparison below as orders of magnitude, not as a precision table.
| Game | Surface (community measurements) |
|---|---|
| GTA 5 | ~80 km² of land, ~127 km² with water |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | ~75 km² |
| GTA 6 | no surface area published by Rockstar |
What can be said with a source behind it is the ratio Rockstar gave: around three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, making it the largest map the studio has ever built. Some preview write-ups also put it at roughly twice the GTA 5 map, but that is the weakest figure of the set, because it comes from creators and is not signed by any of the outlets that attended the session. The real comparison happens on November 19.
The seven cities and 70% enterable buildings rumour
A persistent claim says the map holds seven cities and lets you enter 70 percent of its buildings.
On the city count, the caution from the previous section applies: official material documents a single metropolis, Vice City, plus smaller centres in the other areas.
Why Rockstar does not say how big it is
We do not know, and inventing a reason would be dishonest. What can be observed is the precedent: Rockstar never published surface figures for GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2 either. Its marketing has always described worlds by what they contain, not by what they measure, and GTA 6 is following the same script.
When we will actually know
At launch, on November 19, 2026, the measurement will happen on the real game, and the community will produce it within hours, as with every recent open world. Until then, every number stays an estimate.
Meanwhile our interactive map of Leonida collects the places already confirmed by official material, with the six areas as its frame: it fills up with real data from day one. And for the full picture on everything else, from the date to the editions, there is our everything-we-know guide.
Frequently asked questions
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar has never published a surface area in square kilometres, and the figures going round are not official data. What the studio did state, to the New York Times, is a ratio: the map is around three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Is the GTA 6 map bigger than GTA 5’s?
Yes, and Rockstar says so, though against a different yardstick: around three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. On the direct comparison with GTA 5 the sourcing is weaker, and it should be kept apart from a similar-sounding line: Vice City is said to be roughly twice Los Santos, but that is city against city, not map against map.
How many cities are in GTA 6?
The official areas are six, and Vice City is the only documented major metropolis. The others are the Keys archipelago, the Grassrivers wetlands, the small-town coast of Port Gellhorn, the Ambrosia inland and the Mount Kalaga park.
Does the August 2026 leaked map tell us how big Leonida is?
No, and it is best not to do arithmetic on it. The GTA 6 Mapping Project judged it fake in a first analysis, the county names do not match the official areas, and Rockstar has not authenticated it. The aerial footage does not help either: without the camera’s altitude and field of view there is no scale to work from.
Is it true that 70% of buildings will be enterable?
It is a rumour with no primary source, born on social accounts. The figure is also implausible: seven enterable buildings out of ten in a metropolis would mean tens of thousands of hand-built interiors.
Is there an official full map of GTA 6?
No. Rockstar has shown the areas with names and screenshots, but has not published a complete map of the territory. The ones in circulation are fan reconstructions.
Will the GTA 6 map grow after launch?
Nothing has been announced. Any map-expansion theory is speculation: we will add it here only if it becomes official.
