The Launch Trailer runs ninety seconds, and in ninety seconds Rockstar packs more cuts than in any previous video: after the Keys, almost every shot stays on screen for a second or less. It is a format that invites over-reading, and in the hours after release the web filled up with names, places and theories pinned to half-second frames.

That is why this piece keeps three levels apart. What you see, checked by us across about 180 frames. What you hear, from the video’s official captions, which carry the few spoken lines. And what the press makes of it, which is useful but remains reading, credited to whoever does it. The quick summary is in the trailer news; here we go into detail.

Scene by scene

1. The PlayStation frame. The video opens with the “Plays best on PS5” card and the console, and closes with Sony’s “Play has no limits”. There is no trace of Xbox in the video, and the press noticed right away: it is the visual confirmation of a marketing deal that already marked pre-orders and the cover. It changes nothing in the game, which launches the same day on Xbox Series X|S.

2. The Keys. A pickup tows a jet ski past the “Welcome to The Keys” sign, painted with a heron and a shark; then the aerial view of the Brian’s Marina shed, racks full of boats and open sea behind. Jason polishes a motorboat hull, takes a call in the yard, looks at the water from a dock next to a moored seaplane.

3. Vice City at night. Over the “Rockstar Games presents” card, the lit skyline; then a green lowrider with a painted spiderweb and three men aboard, one with a pistol out of the window, and the iguana at the roadside under an overpass as a red car arrives. The logo fades over the sunset, with the Ferris wheel.

4. The couple. Lucia leaning on the window of a red convertible, Jason at the wheel. It is the only quiet moment before the edit takes off.

5. The heist. Three armed men wade through mangroves at sunset, night-vision goggles on their foreheads. A man in the dark inside of a vehicle, under a red exit sign. What looks like an airboat in a swamp. And the vault: shot through its round door, safe deposit boxes on the walls, two women inside, banknotes flying and some of them burning.

6. Intimacy. A shared shower at sunset, split into several shots across the trailer, and a dancer in a red-lit club. Kotaku made it the subject of its piece, counting three shower shots: a sex scene between the leads shot with the tone of a film, not of a gag.

7. Jason and Lucia at the containers. He wears a “U.S. Army Marauder Combat Training School” t-shirt, she wears a denim jacket, both leaning on a red sports car at a container yard. It is the most readable shot in the whole trailer, and the one the press put on its covers.

8. Speed. A pickup on an airport runway under an airliner wing, with someone leaping onto the landing gear; a sliding chase with the police through the art deco hotels of Vice Beach; the dirt bike jumping over the elevated train; a helicopter exploding behind an armed man on a helipad; a pink biplane with a person standing on the wing, over the beach.

9. The gallery. A bodybuilder at the gym, two women in pink balaclavas with a gold rifle on a stage in front of a camera, a man with braids and a tactical vest watching an explosion and then aiming a pistol in the fog, a night scene shot from below with a man holding his foot on someone’s neck, a woman in shiny black beside him.

10. The ending. Lucia on a rooftop at sunset among the cranes, a street race between the towers, a couple embracing on a balcony over the sea, something smashing through skyscraper windows under a helicopter searchlight, a man hanging out of a helicopter, sheriff lights on a road through the woods, a sniper, a shootout at a roadworks site. Last image: a couple hand in hand on the edge of a balcony, jumping into a blue-lit pool.

Jason gets a voice, and uses it to say one thing

The real news in the trailer is that for the first time Jason talks about himself. The official captions carry three sentences at the opening, over the boatyard images: he got into trouble in the army, he did not leave on good terms, and people like him do not get loans.

That much is fact. The rest is reading, and it is worth saying so. ComingSoon writes that Jason was dishonorably discharged: the line does not say that, only that it went badly. Postmode links the t-shirt to a mission in the first GTA, and Everyeye reads a “Goose Key” sign as a Top Gun nod: curiosities, not facts. And on the mangrove scene, with night-vision goggles and suppressed rifles, outlets split: SVG and VGTimes take it as a possible memory of his army days, others as a present-day mission. The trailer gives no grounds to choose.

Lucia, the call and the ankle monitor

After Jason’s words, on the phone, a recorded voice announces a “free call” from Lucia Caminos. It is the wording that opens calls from a detention facility, and it ties back to Trailer 1, which began with Lucia in prison. VICE and SVG read it as a call from jail; VGTimes as news of her release. The trailer does not settle it, but one detail weighs in: in one of the shower shots an electronic ankle monitor is visible on a foot, and Kotaku attributes it to Lucia. If so, when the story puts her next to Jason, Lucia is not entirely free.

In the ending the voices return: a question, whether they will be okay, and an answer that says they have stuck together through everything. The captions do not say who speaks, and neither do we.

Who is there, according to whom

Rockstar names nobody beyond the two leads. This is the state of the identifications going around, with the grade we give each one.

Two things come up often and call for caution. First: the women in pink balaclavas are filming something, because there is a camera in front of them, and Everyeye sees a Spring Breakers reference. Second: Postmode notes that the woman in shiny black next to Raul dresses like one of the two in balaclavas, and builds a Lucia disguise theory on it. It is an appealing hypothesis, and nothing more.

Vice City mocks someone, as always

The pink biplane over the beach carries, according to Everyeye and Postmode, the brand of an in-game cryptocurrency, “DacityCoin”. If the reading holds, it is the satire of passing fads the series has always done, and it joins the brands already read in official materials. Along the same line, Insider Gaming notes how often the trailer shows buckets of fried chicken and snakes: one-second details that say more about tone than story.

The music is the news that sticks

Flower in a Hurricane is a new Justice single with Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, released on streaming services with the trailer. But the bigger news is in the description: Rockstar calls Justice composers of the game’s original score. Stereogum and Clash treated it as the announcement of the day, and Stereogum adds that fragments of their music could already be heard in the Extended Look. The single is also on Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, the 34 original tracks coming out on November 19 with the game.

What is not there

No interface, no system demonstrated, no news on a PC version or the online. The technical note is the usual statement: “captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5”. Some outlets write “PS5, not PS5 Pro”: that is an inference, Rockstar does not specify. For the game in motion the reference is still our Extended Look breakdown.

And one name is missing: Rockstar does not call it Trailer 3. Much of the press does, and Insider Gaming points out the label is absent. We told the story of “Trailer 3” separately. Several outlets consider it the last trailer before release: likely, given the name, but not announced.

In short

  • The trailer opens in the Keys with Jason, in voice-over, saying he got into trouble in the army.
  • Lucia’s call uses the wording of calls from jail; an electronic ankle monitor appears in a later scene.
  • The vault with burning banknotes is the most concrete image of the heist.
  • Raul Bautista and the officer called Méndez are press identifications, not Rockstar’s.
  • Justice are the composers of the original score, and Flower in a Hurricane is on the official album.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Jason leave the army?

The trailer does not say. Jason says he got into trouble and did not leave on good terms; the “dishonorable discharge” going around is some outlets’ reading, not a line.

Does Lucia call Jason from jail?

The call opens with the wording of calls from a detention facility, and Trailer 1 showed Lucia in prison: it is the most natural reading, but the trailer does not state it, and some read it as news of her release.

Who are the new characters in the Launch Trailer?

Rockstar names nobody beyond Jason and Lucia. The press recognizes Raul Bautista and a police officer already seen in the Extended Look; the other faces, from the bodybuilder to the women in pink balaclavas, have no name yet.

Is the Launch Trailer the last GTA 6 trailer?

The name suggests it, and many outlets say so, but Rockstar has not said there will be no other videos before November 19.

Be ready on launch day.
